CFD Simulation of a space capsule re-entering the earth atmosphere
The simulation of a space capsule is one of the hardest models to deal with and the toughest to converge. First, is the mesh, the geometry I created was 2D and I divided it into 3 layers with different resolution levels. The highest resolution was at the boundary layer of the capsule wall.
Finally, the setup where I used the K Omega SST model to cope with adverse pressure gradient and stable convergence.
In terms of boundary conditions, I used a pressure far-field with Mach 11 and an atmospheric pressure of 80,000 Pa. I enabled the hypersonic driven solution in Fluent ANSYS and used the quasi-transient option for my steady-state simulation. The pictures below show the rewards of my humble attempt!
